Worship and Ministries
Dear Friends and Family of Beaverton First UMC,
As we enter the season after Easter it is easy to wonder what value weekly church attendance has for your family, for you?! I think one of the values regular church attendance always has, and one that we don’t always remember, it that being present in church challenges us and makes us think! At least that is what it should do. Yes, church is family, it is connection to God and God’s people. It is where you will find unconditional love, acceptance and a great place for you, your kids and your whole family to grow spiritually. But in addition, church is a place where you don’t turn your brain off – you turn it on! You are asked to question, to think for yourself about your place in God’s world and to take on the tough challenges presented in scripture. My latest sermon series takes on nothing less than Good and Evil! That age old conflict! One that has raged since the beginning of time! Think we’ll solve it?!? Probably not, but we’ll have a great time thinking about it for five weeks – and thinking from a new perspective. Join us!

To answer your second question, John, we have five Ministry Groups which all have responsibility for certain ministries and missions. They are:
Ministries of Passionate Worship – Passionate Worship is alive, authentic, fresh, and engaging. In Passionate Worship, people are honest before God and one another, and open to God’s presence, truth, and will for their lives. Contact Person: Pastor Kathy Boyes
Ministries of Risk Taking Mission& Service – “Risk-taking Mission and service includes the projects, the efforts, and work people do to make a positive difference in the lives of others for the purposes of Christ, whether or not they will ever be part of the community of faith.” Contact Person: Gloria Gomez
Ministries of Intentional Faith Development – “From the first generation of Christians to the earliest Methodists to the youngest generations of faithful members today, the followers of Jesus mature in faith by learning together in community.” Contact Person: Kathy Johnson
Ministries of Radical Hospitality & Fellowship – “Churches that practice Radical Hospitality don’t merely have ushers and greeters; they also train them, teach them, prepare them, and make their service a vital ministry. Their ushers and greeters don’t merely point, they escort; they don’t merely pass out papers, they make people feel at ease…. They constantly seek to understand the perspective of the newcomer and to see church practices and facilities from the visitor’s point of view so they can anticipate those needs.
Contact Person: Linda Bunga
Nehemiah Ministry - Maintain and beautification church grounds Contact Persons: Ben and Charlotte Jackson (out of town right now)
These are our Ministry Groups and each care for certain ministries within the church. Passionate Worship plans Sunday Worship as well as the Tuesday Communion Worship service and any special services, like Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, prayer vigils, Advent services, etc.
Risk Taking Mission and Service is in charge of Back-Pack Buddies, Visitors to Avamere Rehab Center, the Food Pantry, The Community Assistance Fund, etc.
Intentional Faith Development is in charge of adult and children’s Christian Education at BFUMC. Radical Hospitality and Fellowship are in charge of ushers and greeters, hosting 4 potlucks a year for fellowship at BFUMC, Coffee with the Pastor, and other fellowship related events. And as you know, Nehemiah takes care of the beautification and maintenance of the church grounds. There are contact persons for each of those groups. In addition there are four Administrative Committees. They are: Finance, Nominations, Trustees and Staff-Parish Relations Committee. As chair of Nominations I would like a page on the Web site to explain our Ministry Teams and Committees much like I’ve just explained them to you. Otherwise I’m not sure if Finance, Trustees or SPRC want pages.
